Call to Artists:
Rufus Thomas Mural in Handy Park on Beale Street
Beale Street Management (BSM), an affiliate of the Downtown Memphis Commission, is requesting artist proposals for a painted mural to be installed inside Handy Park on an existing blank, brick exterior wall.
The selected mural will be a colorful installation with an emphasis on honoring Memphis musician Rufus Thomas and pay homage to the music, culture and history of Beale Street.
Handy Park, located on world-famous Beale Street and Third Street, is a public space that offers free daily music concerts, hosts large and small events, and serves as a focal point for millions of visitors to Beale Street every year. The Park is undergoing renovations to improve the visitor experience.
The selected mural will be installed on an east facing brick wall in the plaza area inside the Park which is 31’ wide by 14 ½’ tall (click for photo). The selected mural will use all or the majority of the wall. A granite monument in devoted to Rufus Thomas is located in front of the mural wall with one foot of space between the monument and the wall. The monument is 3’ wide and approximately 8’ tall.
Deadline for project submission is February 13, 2015 by 4 pm with installation on or before April 1, 2015.
Artists are required to submit a proposal based on guidelines outlined in the Submission Application. Selected pieces will be determined by a selection committee, which will review and evaluate proposal submissions. The selection committee's evaluation criteria is posted.
Submissions are open to all artists (at least 18 years old) residing within 250 miles of Memphis, TN.

Budget and Payment:
Beale Street Management (BSM) will cover material costs, installation costs, artist fees and other costs associated with the fabrication and installation of the mural as outlined in the artist’s budget proposal. BSM will carefully consider the proposed budget submitted when making its selection.
BSM will deliver payment to the artist for materials and out-of-pocket expenses outlined in the budget proposal upon execution of the artist contract with BSM. Artist fees will be paid upon completion and inspection of the final work.
A Selection Committee will evaluate each submission and will select the mural to be installed. The Committee will make their selection using the following project goals to evaluate each submission:

By submitting your application, you agree, if selected, to install the mural on or before April 1, 2015.
Applications, previous work samples and proposed mural sketches or mock-ups must be submitted to the Beale Street Management office no later than February 13, 2015 at 4 pm.
