Laura, I don’t know of any events happening, but I can direct you to some of the best musicians you’ll ever hear. Go to Alfreds on any Saturday night and watch Matt Tutor, he’s an amazing talent. Also go see Mercury Boulevard, usually they play Blues City Cafe late on the weekends. Hope you enjoy your stay here in Memphis. Beale street is a happenin’ place.

have been to Beale Street several times but New Years 2009 was my first New Years on Beale, had a blast. Good music and fun. If you want to get reservations for a club now is the time. I know BB Kings and Rum Boogie Cafe have parties lined up, not sure about the rest. If you haven’t been, you need to check it out.

Good question. Basically, you can bring your under 21 son onto Beale Street with you between 8:00 am (we have two great breakfast restaurants) and about 9:00 pm when we start checking IDs at all the entry points to the district. At that time — on Friday and Saturday — the district becomes a 21 and up venue. Fortunately, you can hear live music either in Handy Park or the grotto beside King’s Palace or in a couple of the clubs such as Blues Hall as early as about noon or 1:00 pm on most day in good weather. Thus you can get him exposed to about 8 hours of blues on 5/22. Note that on Sunday through Thursday, we do not ID at the district entry barricades and that you can bring him in after 9:00 pm, however, at that time you will only be able to take him into clubs which do not allow smoking (that might be about half of the clubs). Don’t miss the big Red White & Blues Celebration in Handy Park on Beale Street. Live music starts in the park at 6:00 and the big fireworks grand finale is at 10:00. You can enjoy food & beverage in the Handy Park and also meander up and down the street to our various clubs. There are several hotels within easy walking distance including the DoubleTree, Hampton Inn Suites, Peabody, and Westin. Also within easy walking distance of Beale is the Rock & Soul Museum, Cotton Museum, Belz Museum of Judaica & Asian Art, the WC Handy House Historic Home, and you are a short trolley ride away from Sun Studio and the National Civil Right Museum. Come see us!

DoubleTree Hotel, Peabody, Westin and the Hampton Inn Suites are the closest to Beale and all are great. Happily you have to go no further that Handy Park on Beale Street to see a great fireworks show; we’ll start live music in the park at 6:00 and have fireworks at 10:00 pm. There’s great BBQ on Beale – the ribs at Blues City Cafe are terrific and the shoulder at The Pig on Beale is fabulous. Also within walking distance of Beale are the Rendezvous, A&R BBQ, and Leonard’s BBQ. Enjoy!

Hi, I plan to come through and spend a night in Memphis with my son. He’s 15 and really into guitar. Is there a place we can go to have dinner and listen to music on Beale Street that has an appropriate atmosphere for a teenager? Unfortunately, we will be there on a Monday night in the middle of July, so I realize that pickings may be slim (pun intended).

Monday or Saturday or any other day, its all prime time for guitar pickin’ on Beale Street! Our street musicians begin around noon in good weather – you’ll find mid-day music in Handy Park and on the patio beside King’s Palace and later afternoon/early evening music in those places as well as adjacent to Lil Anthony’s Cafe. Don’t miss amazing street musician Richard Johnson, out by the New Daisy, on weekend nights. And that’s just the outside music. Very often you’ll find live music in the afternoon inside Handy Hall or Club 152. By night fall you’ll see live music in about a dozen clubs up and down the street…and it’s all top talent every single night. Our curfew for young people under 21 is 11:00 pm though on Friday and Saturday nights security forces will begin checking ID as the entry barriers as early as 9:00 pm. Still, your son will have the opportunity to see dozens of very talented performers in the afternoon and early evening and should have the time of his life!

Bike Night is a weekly occurrence on Wednesdays between April and September and its lots of fun. Basically, we do not allow vehicular traffic on the street except during Bike Night. Form 6:00 pm on ward you may enter the Beale Street Historic District (Second to Fourth Streets) on the west end and park your bike. There are bi-weekly radio broadcasts live from Beale by Rock 103. There are great opportunities to walk around and see all sorts of cool bikes and chat with bike owners. Of course our terrific restaurants have great food & beverage available and there is live music issuing from a dozen doorways. In short, it is a weekly street party. Nearby hotels include the DoubleTree, Holiday Inn Select, Hampton Inn Suite, Westin, and Peabody.

Definitely bring the family to Beale Street! Every afternoon (when it isn’t raining) top quality musicians play in Handy Park and at other spots along the street, roughly from noon until 10:00 pm and sometimes later. You can show your kids America’s homegrown art form: the blues. The would also enjoy the various gift shops along Beale Street, especially Schwab’s which is the city’s oldest continually operating retail store. Going back to the 1820s, inventory in Schwab’s includes boiled collars and spats as well as more up to date souvenirs. You can tour the WC Handy Historic Home, walk the Brass Note Walk of Fame, and sign on for a unique musical bus tour with Backbeat Tours. Links to all of these are on this web site. That’s probably Richard Johnson, a unique troubador who plays on the sidewalk on weekend nights in front of the New Daisy Theater. Whatever might be on YouTube, he is more amazing in person! You can find him most Fri & Sat night after about 9 pm on the east end of Beale. There is a surface parking lot adjacent to the Beale Street Historic district off Peabody Place between Rufus Thomas Blvd and Fourth. If it is full the is a 1,000 car, four story garage just across Peabody Place — just 40 yards from the Beale Street fun. If you arrive around 5:00 you’ll find some good street musicians especially around Handy Park; bands in the clubs will crank up shortly thereafter. Blues City Cafe at Beale @ Second has outstanding ribs and The Pig on Beale has fabulous shoulder. Come back for breakfast at Miss Polly’s Chicken & Waffles and try the BBQ omelet! Have fun!

Congratulations on 31 years! Every night is fun on Beale Street in that we have live music 7 days per week. The crowds are really big on Saturday so if you prefer festive but smaller, you might try Thursday, Friday or Sunday. You can have a terrific romantic dinner at Itta Bena or King’s Palace, catch the piano bar at Silky’s, and dance the night away at Rum Boogie, Ground Zero, or Alfred’s. And there are many more choices beside – find a complete list of our restaurants and clubs with web site links on our main page. We look forward to seeing you for your anniversary!

Thanks for your service to the NOLA mission! On a Saturday night you’ll want to bring your under 21 folks to the street fairly early, maybe 6:00 or 7:00, as carding for age will begin about 8:30 pm. They are legal on the street with parents/guardians up until 11:00 pm when a curfew goes into effect. But that’s plenty of time to take in some great blues music at any of our clubs and even on the street. Try Dyer’s Hamburgers for a family fun, modest priced meal. Some clubs may not allow people under 21 because they allow smoking – a local ordinance requires one or the other.

Come on down! While there are terrific singers in our clubs and in Handy Park, everybody can sing on Beale at nightly karaoke – depending on which night you can sing at Superior Grill and Alfred’s. Belt out your best blues or R&B tune and tell all the folks back home that you sang on Beale. And we love networking and making new friends!

Sure, Bike Night is every Wednesday from mid-April to the end of September (barring thunderstorms) and basically form about 5:00 pm onward , bikers are invited to ride onto Beale Street and park. The result is an amazing show, an array of all kinds of motorcycles, hundreds of them parked side by side between Second and Fourth Streets. People enjoy food & beverage and walk around looking at the bikes, talking to owners, and generally have a great time.

October is a great time to come to Beale Street as the temperature comfortably settles into patio weather. Your trip will fall just before our exciting 10/9/10 concert in Handy Park by Bobby Rush, but no worries, there’ll still be plenty to do with live music 7 days per week on the street and in the clubs. Oh and you’ll definitely want to visit the WC Handy Historic Home, Schwab’s Dry goods, our Brass Note walk of Fame on Beale and nearby attractions such as the Rock & Soul Museum, Cotton Museum, and National Civil Rights Museum.

ITS 2 BLOCKS AWAY AND CONVENIENT. LAST TIME I WAS IN MEMPHIS I STAYED 5 MILES AWAY ON THE ARKANSAS SIDE, HOTELS WERE CHEAPER THERE APPROX. $70.00 BUT IF YOU TAKE A TAXI TO BEALE THEY CHARGE YOU $35.00 ONE WAY! SO THE PRICE EVENS OUT BY STAYING CLOSER. ALSO THE HOTELS WILL CHARGE YOU FOR PARKING. OUR HOTEL WAS $12.00 A DAY BUT WORTH IT. DONT BE AFRAID TO CALL THE HOTELS AND ASK ANY QUESTION YOU HAVE. ALSO CHECK PRICELINE.COM . AND DONT WORRY ABOUT FINDING SOMETHING TO DO.
